The wild, wild west is now

This evening, 60 Minutes featured a story on AR-15 assault rifles and the damage they can do which is a lot.  It is proving to be the murder weapon of choice for most of the horrific crimes against humanity committed of late -- the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, the Las Vegas shooting, and Sandy Hook Elementary School to name just three.  Things have gotten so bad that experts believe every single American needs to training on how to deal with the sort of injuries caused by any gunshot wound but the especially the AR-15 assault rifle.

It is disgusting that we have to have things like this inside our heads, info that has to be summoned forth if yet another moron with a gun has decided he wants to be a maximum racist or anti-semite or just a psychopath.  They want us to take a short class covering the preliminaries -- it is just 60 minutes long -- and they want everyone in our land to learn from it.

I am going to try.  I think there is one I can take when I'm on vacation next month.

Meanwhile, you don't do it because you're nice or it was the will of your deity or you want to get into heaven or the devil was dancing at your door and this would make him go away.  You do it because it is the right thing do it and because you can do it.  If you can't do it because you are scared or blood makes you wretch or you can't bear human fraility, convince a friend to go ... and then go with them because maybe you will learn something and you will get over your fear.

Who's that dame?

It has been many, many weeks since my last post and apparently I've not been missed. That is okay! Things have happened since my last attempt. Have you seen the gallinule?

American purple gallinule, courtesy of VIREO Yesterday morning I set off with the birders to look at birds at the Magic Hedge near Montrose Harbor in Chicago.  As we were arriving, I found out a gallinule had been spotted very recently.   Two men were walking away from the harbor as we were leaving our car.  "Did you see the gallinule?" my sister asked. These were two very sweet and funny guys.  "No," said one, "but I saw a really big fish," and held his hands about 20 inches apart.  "I don't look at fish," said the second, "but I saw a grebe.  The gallinule is supposed to be down by Slip A."
